Chapter 6 rounds off the book by exploring in detail an imagined transition, using futuristic but plausible technology, in which two human beings become so cognitively merged that they are to all intents and purposes a single person. Thought experiments like this have sometimes been mentioned briefly by philosophers, but the account developed in this book allows for a detailed understanding of what this would be like from the inside.
