About

Born in Bursa in 1977, having very "Ottoman/mix" ancestors from Heraklion & Chania (Crete), Ruse (Bulgaria), Babuna region (R.of Macedonia) and Eskisehir Seyitgazi District; Gulcin is an anachronical fellow citizen of Nikos Kazantzakis, Elias Canetti, Bogomils and Seyyid Battal Gazi! She accepts herself as the neighbour of the sacred olive trees, Sea of Marmara, lake Iznik and all the sufis of Bursa. Her best river in the world is Danube/Tuna, since little Gulcin has informed what "Tunalı" means from his beloved father, Erdal. Related or not, she has dreamed to be an archaeologist, author and detective in her childhood.  When she graduated from Sociology, she grasped that  she must know the "story" of people to understand the "society". Hence her "unendliche Geschichte" began...
Gulcin wrote her MA thesis on the daily concerns of an Ottoman Astrologer, Muderriszade Sadullah el-Ankaravi. The hidden motive was the fact that she was impressed by the very "self narrative" colour of his notes on the margins of Calendars and Horoscopes. Although Gulcin wondered the time concept among the Ottomans at first, as Sadullah Efendi had given a very detailed account of his daily life from his dresses to his servants and dreams; she obeyed to them. In other words she went in quest of a little dormouse with shiny eyes, who had gnawed the wooden prayer beads of Sadullah Efendi and noted by him in one of the faded pages. Serif Mardin, Edhem Eldem and especially Isik Tamdogan helped Gulcin in her MA thesis adventure.
Gulcin's amazement changed its direction to the History of Ancient Athens narrated by the mufti of Athens- Mahmud Efendi- in the beginning of 18th century. At this moment she tries to understand the mental map of Mahmud Efendi. How he "read" Ancient Athens is her main problem in her dissertation thesis. Fikret Adanir is her first Doktorvater and Markus Koller is the second one. Her favorite word in German is "Doktorvater/Doktormutter". For her it rings the old wisdom tradition...
Nowadays Gulcin nearly completes her thesis under very hard conditions. She does not know whether there is a strip in "PhD comics" illustrating a PhD student with two daughters struggle to concentrate on Thucydides, Herodotus, Theseus, Amazons, Solon, Themistocles, Callimachus, Militiades, Aristides, Darius, Alexander the Great etc. in Ottoman context!
Gulcin likes to write books for children. She writes poems only for herself.
(Edition comes: Gulcin is Dr.des since 10 January 2012. Mission incomplete, because she must make her corrections and prepare her book from now on.)
